Why Polar Bears Dance?
In psychology, the concept of polarity has been examined for centuries, with the most notable work attributed to Carl Jung where his idea of "holding the tension between opposites" revolutionized the field in the 1900s . Back then, he postulated that if we are able to acknowledge the two contradictory points of views in our mind, and be uncomfortable with that, a wonderful thing might happen. He referred to that unique capacity for our internal transformation as a "transcendant function". We all have it, but often need a friendly or other reminders to begin experiencing it.
Further back in time, in the1st century BC, a great philosopher Heraclitus argued that the opposites comprise unity. The way up is the way down, the path up the North Pole is the same as down the South Pole. Our journeys between the opposite shores and opposite points of views often define our destiny.
Polarity is that formidable force of nature that gives shape to every molecule in our body, time and space to our universe. It is the yin and yang, mind and body, subject and object, good and evil, Dvaita and Advaita Vedanta; the list can be endless. To me (and I am taking a leap over many more arguments here, in the greatest tradition of our times), polarity points to a sense of oneness. Have you found the one?
So, back to the polar bears... they are awe-inspiring, enigmatic creatures that live far in the Arctic that is mostly uninhabitable to humans because of the drastic temperatures year-round. Polar Bears are currently endangered due to the global warming and melting of the glaciers, their habitat is drastically decreasing. Their disappearance reminds us of the eternal struggle, Man vs Beast, Dark vs Light, Human vs Nature. The fragility of this Earth is in our hands.
Polar Bears Dance is also a metaphor that may just capture the essence of our individual and collective efforts to preserve life's essence and honor the dance of the opposites to restore our collective Soul.
